There is no I in e/os
Sometime a go I started switching my tech from big to smaller. From closed to more open. More about this in how to replace it.
Inspired by the project Mobifree I bought a refurbished Pixel phone to run e/os on and to replace my iPhone. E/os is a pretty good fork of Android. It is not as nice as iOs; for instance: the camera app for example is decent but not the high quality that Apple provides. But after all the weird events of last couple of months, I am determined to vote with my feet… To sell it to my self, since I really like my iPhone, I decided to call it an experiment of two years.
Having one piece of hardware that is completely different, forces changes in my way of working.
Here are a couple of guidelines:
- Open source unless
- Escape hatches: it should be easy to change tools, tools should use open standards
- Calm and distraction free, no nagging software
- Clear goals for each device that I use: mobile is for music/ podcasts/ tasks. But not work.
Here are a couple of apps I use:
- F-Droid as the default app store
- Lawnchair as a launcher app
- Immich as a my photo library
- Nextcloud for files/ calendars/ contacts
- AntennaPod for podcasts
- Firefox as browser
- KNMI for weather
- Chaka as a book reader
- A modified version of Ultrasonic for music streaming
- Obsidian for notes
- Ticktick for todo’s (but not happy with this one)
- Tasks.org to store supermarket lists
